ECOIMPACT Personal Learning Environment (ECOIMPACT-PLE)
Description: Main result. ECOIMPACT-PLE is implemented as a software and hardware system allowing learners to form their personal information and education spaces.
- To enhance competence of learners in the area of economic and societal impacts of local weather, air quality and climate (via created educational content).
- To develop skills of using the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for managing weather-sensitive activities based on objective detailed environmental data (via created infrastructure).
The PLE software component (including educational materials) can be used by any registered user from anywhere. Extended use of the PLE system with enabled IoT component is possible at ECOIMPACT universities with appropriately equipped experimental zones and laboratories.

Short-term professional development courses for weather-sensitive sectors of economy (D2.2)
Description: Short-term professional development courses for firms and administrations in weather-sensitive sectors of economy. The courses aim to enhance competence of learners in the area of economic and societal impacts of local weather, air quality and climate. The courses are available on distance learning platforms of ECOIMPACT universities (limited access) and in ECOIMPACT PLE (open access).
University course on Economic Meteorology (D2.4)
Description: A university 3-level (BSc/MSc/PhD) course on Economic Meteorology is based on selected cases from short-term sectoral courses. The course programs are in compliance with national Russian and Ukrainian educational standards, as well as with Bologna requirements. The course is available on distance learning platforms of ECOIMPACT universities (limited access) and in ECOIMPACT PLE (open access).
Update course on Economic Meteorology for hydrometeorology professionals (D2.5)
Description: Update courses on Economic Meteorology for specialists of hydrometeorological services of Russia and Ukraine based on the same case-based approach, as the university course. In Russia, this is a short-term update course “Economics of specialized hydrometeorological support” (72 hours) ending with a certificate on short-term update offered by Roshydromet ATI. In Ukraine, OSENU Centre for Postgraduate Studies offers 2-6 ECTS course (depending on requirements of a particular customer). The courses are available on distance learning platforms of OSENU and ATI (limited access), and in ECOIMPACT PLE (open access).

Methodological Recommendations on Practical Works for Students in Zoometeorology, 6 parts, 96 p., 2016 (D2.6)
Description: The teaching aid covers in detail the issues related to assessment and application of the climatic potential of territories, methods of its optimization, as well as adaptive reactions of different biological groups to its changes. Published to support the new MSc course on Zoometeorology developed within ECOIMPACT at Kherson State Agricultural University. Language: Ukrainian.
Monograph “Climatic Risks for Functioning of Economic Sectors in Ukraine under the Climate Change”, 548 p., 2018 (D2.6)
Description: The monograph presents and analyses the impact of climatic conditions on a wide range of economic sectors of Ukraine. Quantitative characteristics of this impact are obtained, illustrating the influence of weather conditions, in long-term and with regard to climate change scenarios, on the efficiency of transport and energy systems, water resources, crop productivity, etc., as well as socio-economic implications of higher air temperatures. In ECOIMPACT, one of the main objectives was to develop training courses to take a better account of the influence of meteorological conditions on weather-sensitive economic sectors. The quantitative indicators obtained in the monograph were used as case studies and for applied calculations while developing the courses’ practical part. Teaching aid “Automated Monitoring and Assessment of Atmospheric Air Quality”, 58 p., 2019 (D2.6)
Description: This teaching aid is intended for independent study of the basic provisions on monitoring and assessment of atmospheric air quality in Ukraine and other countries, in particular, the EU. In addition, an insight is provided into the technical specifications and service instructions of the state-of-the-art instrument Vaisala AQT420 for ambient air quality monitoring purchased under the ECOIMPACT project by three Ukrainian universities. The publication is intended for training of students during laboratory works, practical classes and internships, and can be freely used by the public, post-graduate students, young scientists, researchers and experts in the field of environmental monitoring, control and assessment for non-commercial purposes. Textbook “Methods for Applied Systems Analysis in Hydrometeorology”, 701 p., 2017 (D2.6)
Description: Theoretical bases of applied system analysis in hydrometeorology are given: the theory of matrices, methods of interpolation, numerical integration, numerical solution of algebraic, ordinary differential equations, equations with partial derivatives and their systems. Briefly outlined are the basic methods of processing, analysis, assimilation of information, formalized description of hydrometeorological processes and phenomena based on the provisions of the probabilities theory, mathematical statistics, and the theory of random processes. For students and post-graduate students in natural sciences.
Published within the ECOIMPACT project because of the urgent need to teach students the modern methods of processing the ever-growing volumes of meteorological information obtained using the Internet of Things technologies. Textbook “Practical training course in meteorology and climatology”, 117 p., 2018 (D2.6)
Description: Students are introduced to classical methods of meteorological observations used in the global meteorological monitoring system of the World Meteorological Organization. The textbook was published within the ECOIMPACT project in order that students learn to combine the new methods of meteorological monitoring developed in the project on the basis of the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies with classical monitoring methods. Since the IoT-based environmental monitoring is still at its initial stage of development and is constantly being improved, the results of observations obtained with classical methods often serve as a standard for correcting the results from meteorological IoT-enabled sensors. Textbook “Economic meteorology”, 352 p., 2019 (D2.6)
Description: The first textbook on this discipline in Ukraine. It covers a broad range of urgent issues, including the impacts of climate change on various sectors of economy and on society, principles of making optimal business decisions based on weather information, marketing and advertising of weather-related services. Considering the increasing role and value of meteorological information in the conditions of rapid climate change, which in fact had stipulated the economic meteorology becoming one of the main ECOIMPACT topics, the book was published timely to support both the already developed and future ECOIMPACT training courses. It will be of interest not only to students, but also to hydrometeorology professionals and managers employed in weather-sensitive sectors of economy. Teaching aid “School Weather Station”, 15 p., 2019 (D2.6)
Description: Work on the ECOIMPACT project has resulted in the idea of creating a volunteer hydrometeorological movement in Russia, and particularly — a crowdfunding network of digital meteorological devices for collecting the environmental information. Dissemination activities have triggered cooperation with the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”, which agreed to supply weather stations to 20 schools in Moscow, while ATI has published this manual as a methodological guide. Development of the network continues after the project. On 6-7 January 2020, ATI specialists from the newly created (within ECOIMPACT) “Career Guidance Center” held master classes in “Technograd” recreational and educational complex at VDNKh Exhibition Centre (Moscow, Russia). Analytical review of modern PLE software and MOOCs (D1.1)
Description: The consortium collected and analyzed the information on modern personal learning environment (PLE) software, MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and Online Laboratories. Analysis was focused on tools offering adaptive interactive learning with individual educational tracks and supporting the Internet of Things (IoT) concept and laboratory practice.
Synopsis on existing commercialization models of educational software and related services (D1.2)
Description: The basic business models, which have already been successfully implemented in the market of educational software, were summarized. Not dealing yet with the issues of product architecture and services, the focus was on the description of the potential benefits and risks of different business models, as well as on formulation of the possible sources of income.
End-user needs analysis survey (D1.3)
Description: Surveys were carried out in Russia and Ukraine to reveal the expectations (structure, delivery mode, content) of end-users (business entities, employees of hydrometeorological services, general public, authorities) towards the developed PLE and the demand for PLE and related services, taking into account regional differences.
Algorithm for building individual learning tracks (D2.3)
Description: An algorithm for building the individual learning tracks in ECOIMPACT-PLE has been developed. To create an individual learning track adapted to a current level of learner’s knowledge, a developer of educational materials generates basic diagrams of transition between the information blocks (the developer can be both a teacher and a person preparing educational materials for further memorization, enhanced understanding, or using in further professional activities). An individual learning track is built automatically based on possible (provided by the developer) transitions between information blocks.
Refined structure of and requirements to hardware and software PLE components (D3.1)
Description: The refinement took into account the specificity of beneficiary institutions, developed educational materials, and end-user feedback in order to maximize the relevance and potential of the resulting integrated PLE.
PLE structure and functions for various categories of learners (D3.3)
Description: Based on the needs analysis conducted for different categories of users, the general functions of PLE were defined for all categories of users, and the specific PLE functions for (i) hydrometeorology professionals and students, and (ii) business audience.
